COLUMBIA - After nearly two months and 120 hours of work, one man will leave his lights on for you.

This is a story told by Randy Fletcher:

I had been putting a few strands up on the eve of the house. Over the years I just kept doing more and more.

We sort through them, sorting the good lights from the bad lights.

All the ones that don't work go into that pile. If it's good I'll put it in the good as new pile.

Each year I'm trying to switch over to more and more led lights because they're energy saving.

There's quite a few there.

I'm Will Treelighter and this is preparation for lighting the Magic Tree.

My real name is Randy Fletcher.

Today we are unboxing some of the lights I've bought. Went shopping at Halloween time in order to take advantage of the colors that are only available at this time of year.

I'm pleased to get a bunch of these yellow-green. Just another color I can put on.

This year I've maybe spent about two grand.

When we're done, we will have them all in bins and they will all be counted.

It's the crab apple tree that's covered with lights from the foot of the trunk to the ends of all the branches.

I'll get started with laying out the extension cords. I might actually get a few lights put up.

This will be the fourteenth year.

A family told me what they called it. I made a sign that said Magic Tree.

We'll need to have the outlets in strategic places throughout the tree.

It's a little bit embarrassing being out here putting up Christmas lights in October .

It's kind of a slow process.

I keep increasing the amount of blue on it since I discovered the led blues, which are so nice and bright.

I'm going to have to get another ladder out here.

I've thrown some breakers a couple of times and had to redistribute the power. Eight dedicated 20 amp circuits.

You just have to have a lot of patience. Cause, your lights tend to get tangled just twisting them around all the little branches.

After I've been up here for a couple of hours, I feel like a break.

On a nice day, there's almost nothing I'd rather do than climb up in a tree.

It seems to me, the magic tree does convey something that is really impossible to put into words.

When we look at something beautiful it inspires. I see beauty as the signature of love. It's like a snapshot of that love.

Randy Fletcher lights up the magic tree every day from 5 p.m. until midnight. He said it costs about $10 a day to power.
