COLUMBIA - Gas prices held steady at $3.49 on Wednesday; however, experts believe that could change due to Tropical Storm Gustav.

Last week, gas prices rose in anticipation of the storm from $3.29 to $3.49. On Wednesday crude oil prices dropped nearly $6 a barrel - a little over $109 per barrel.

Hurricane Gustav missed gulf refineries. Experts said this is why gas prices will drop at the pump.

"The refineries, as I understand it, didn't sustain any damage," said MU Assistant Professor Saku Aura. "You would expect there to be a positive change now in the wholesale prices and that should pretty quickly be reflected in retail prices. When there's a hurricane or storm coming, there's an expectation that there could be damage to the refinery capacity and so that expectation of bad news gets built into whole sale prices."

Gas station owners said they did not feel gas prices would go down immediately. Other factors affecting gas prices include world events and the recent Labor Day holiday.
