City Councilwoman Almeta Crayton is finishing up her third term representing Columbia's First Ward. Crayton says during her leadership, there has been a noticeable change in the ward. Residents we spoke with agree.

"Yeah, I would vote for the person that's been in office over the past 9 years," First Ward resident Charles Garrett said. "Over the past five at least, say you walk through the projects or the ghetto, you don't see as many dope dealers as you used to."

Crayton's term wraps up in Spring 2008 and she already faces three challengers. Each of the four candidates has different platforms, which is not suprising for a city where everyone is looking for something different.

"I'm basically for the person that is more for the people," First Ward resident Michael Beier said. "That's not worried about the city as much, but more for the people, you know? That's who I'd vote for."

Many First Ward residents have their opinions about changes they'd like to see, and with 7 months left to election day, some of those residents may end up on the ballot.

To officially run for City Council, a resident has to petition and submit 50 signatures of registered voters. Terms last for 3 years and there is no limit on the number of terms a person can serve.
