BOONE COUNTY - Agricultural company Monsanto awarded a $200,000 grant to a new educational farm under construction near Columbia.
The greenhouse will be a new learning center at the Jefferson Farm and Gardens. The project is taking 76 acres near U.S. 63 and New Haven Road and building a working educational farm there. The project started last year and so far has only completed a machine shed. The greenhouse will have a variety of purposes.
"In the greenhouse we'll have plants in various stages of growth. We'll have different tours and workshops. People can come through, see things growing and they can actually participate in a more hands on experience if they are coming with a specific workshop," said Jennifer Smith of the Jefferson Institute.
The farm will have demonstration fields, gardens, education rooms, as well as a children's garden and barnyard. Officials say fall 2008 is the target date to open.
