COLUMBIA - Columbia Police had three extra units patrolling Interstate 70 for unsafe drivers.

Officer Brian Tate said that officers will be watching for traffic offenses.

"We usually typically get, between us and Boone County, about 200 cars," Tate said. "The goal of course is zero."

Police are looking for drivers who are speeding, driving aggressively, and making unsafe lane changes. They're also increasing enforcement of Missouri's "Move Over" statute.

"If you're on the highway and you're approaching a patrol vehicle which has pulled over another vehicle, you have to, if you can safely do so, move into the passing lane," Officer Jessie Haden explained.

Tate said officers typically enforce this law by having a second police car follow the patrol car that pulls over the driver.

"We'll watch for vehicles not moving over for the officers making stops," Tate said.

Officials say drivers can expect more traffic enforcement when the roads are more crowded.

"There's a lot of traveling going on over the holiday season," Haden said. "It can be a big hustle and bustle time, and we want to remind people to give themselves a lot of extra time and be safe."

Missouri Department of Transportation officials said mid-Missourians will drive an estimated 50 million miles during the holiday weekend. They said law enforcement's top priority over the weekend is safety.

"The number one thing is, please take your time and buckle up so you can arrive alive," MoDOT Central Region District Engineer Roger Schwartze said.

The Columbia Police Department will continue its heightened enforcement on Friday around the Columbia Mall.
