JEFFERSON CITY - Volunteers grabbed paint brushes and more Thursday to spruce up some United Way agencies.

The hallways of the Boys and Girls Club are silent right now, but Board Member Jackie Coleman said after school is a different story.

"Any given day we have about 100 children that come to this facility, which means we have 200 hands on these walls," she said.

With brushes, rollers, and gallons of paint the club is getting a fresh outlook and a fresh coat of paint.

"They're painting many of the walls of the facility and making it bright and pretty for the children who come," said Coleman.

Across mid-Missouri, organizations and businesses are helping the United Way of Central Missouri, and at the Boys and Girls Club there are some familar faces.

"I am just cutting this wall here so Sarah can come in a follow through with a roller. This is something that KOMU does every year," said Diana Rowland, a KOMU employee.

At United Way's Day of Caring helping out is as easy as picking up a paint brush. At a banquet later on, volunteers got even more strokes.

"We provide funding through this campaign to 25 agencies and programs," said United Way President Linda McAnany.

The United Way's goal is to raise $1.6 million.

"We're encouraging everyone in the community to step forward and help us with what they can," Mcanany said.

Helping the United Way helps everyone in the community.

"We would not be able to function and provide service to the community without the United Way," Coleman said.

Because of rain, organizers had to cancel some of the outdoor projects Thursday. Businesses and organizations will also join the Heart of Missouri United Way's Day of Caring in Columbia Friday.
