COLUMBIA - The Boone County Fire Protection District is eyeing a $26 million bond issue.
The money could come from a bond issue in as little as two years, and the Fire Board thinks the time may have come to go back to voters to improve fire department operation.
It's been ten years since voters approved a bond issue for the fire district. The upgrade comes from eight months of input from staff members at various fire stations.
"We now have some ideas of what everybody thinks the capital needs might be. Obviously we need to have some serious discussions and prioritize those needs and say building this new fire station is more important to adding on to that fire station," Board Treasurer Dave Griggs said.
The draft proposal of the department's improvements total over $26 million. The plans include buying new fire engines, tankers, and other response vehicles totaling more than 10 million dollars. Updates to the fire stations and the addition of new facilities adds another $11.5 million, and equipment is $4.3 million.
"The community continues to grow, at a very rapid rate. Our response numbers continue to increase significantly each year. Last year we ran over 4,400 calls for emergency services," Fire Chief Steve Paulsell said.
The Fire Board has yet to decide when they might put the issue up for a vote.
