JEFFERSON CITY- The Blunt administration's battle over releasing emails is leading the Missouri House of Representatives to consider not one, but two bills that would strengthen the state's "Sunshine Law."

One of the bills would increase the fine for violating the sunshine law, the other deals with education about the law. Representative Jeff Roorda introduced the bill to the government affairs committee this morning.

The bill would require all Missouri government officials from city hall to the Governor's office to receive a one to two hour training on the state's sunshine law.

Roorda said while there are some intentional violations of the law, most are just people who weren't educated about it.

"I think that those violations are generally through ignorance of the law," Democratic Representative Jeff Roorda of Barnhart said. "That's usually the first thing you hear out of an elected officials mouth when they've been caught violating the sunshine law: 'Well, we thought we were in compliance, so we didn't know."

Most of the committee seemed in favor of the bill, but they had a few concerns including how the training would be enforced. Roorda is drafting a revision on the bill and says he should have it ready to present to the committee again next week.
