MOBERLY - It's show time at Moberly's Five and Drive, and Mid-Missouri's only drive-in movie theatre shows current big budget movies.

"Every weekend we get people here who have never been to the drive-in theatre before, and we have the children, sometimes the older teenagers, being brought by their parents because of this nostalgic experience and they want to share it with their children," said circuit manager for B & B Theaters Daniel Van Orden.

So instead of sitting around the dinner table, kids and their families are watching a movie under the stars for the small cost of $6.50.

"I think there will always be the people who want to go out and relax and bring their barbecue grill out and put the tailgate of the F150 down and watch the movie outside," Van Orden said. "As long as we continue to put a first class product on the screens and have good sound and a good picture, we'll have them."

A few years after Orden started working at B & B Theaters, the drive-ins disappeared.

"The demise came in the late 80's," Van Orden explained. "That's when HBO came in and video tapes started coming in and the kind of movies they were playing at the drive-in you could watch at home."

Van Orden says the drive-in works here because of consolidation.

"We don't have to bring in a different staff to run this drive-in," Van Orden said. "We're not bringing in separate equipment or a separate snack bar, it's all together. And when we're not waiting on a drive-in customer, we're waiting on customers at the 5 screens that are inside."

There's still plenty to see, you get to watch 2 movies at the drive-in. If you're wondering why some Mid-Missouri farmer doesn't turn his corn field into a drive-in theatre, it's the start-up cost. The screen and projector are extremely expensive. And in this day and age, the Hollywood movie makers are the ones making most of the profits, not the individual theatres. The theatres make most of their money from concessions.
