HUNTSDALE - Huntsdale citizens voted on taxes for the first time ever, and new taxes mean expansion for this small town.
The 30 people making up the tiny town of Huntsdale dream big. Their dream came closer to reality Tuesday as the town passed a 50 cent property tax levy nine to four.
For the past 16 years, Mayor Debby Lancaster has lived in Huntsdale. She says the tax could add new buildings to the town.
"We will try to buy the piece of property to build a community center so that everyone will have access to it," said Lancaster
People usually hate discussing taxes, but Lancaster thinks it is an essential topic in her town. "It can't do anything but help, it's generating revenue that's needed by the community," she said.
The property tax will generate only about $17,000, but the community sees it as a starting point.
Lancaster said the town is excited the tax passed and "that was the general consensus from the forum and as far as the vote that's exactly what they wanted" she said.
Huntsdale also passed a half cent sales tax to generate money for future development and expansion.
Huntsdale only has two businesses, but Lancaster looks forward to the sales tax revenue as well.
