JEFFERSON CITY - The 4th of July means plenty of fireworks and barbecue, and hopefully some recycling this year, too.
The "Cell Phones for Soldiers" program recycles old cell phones to help connect military families.
In the last year the national organization has recycled more than 2.2 million donated phones to military families, which is a 43 percent increase from the year before. Since two Massachusetts teens created it in 2004, Cell Phones for Soldiers has used proceeds from recycled cell phones to provide 500,000 prepaid calling cards to soldiers overseas.
Donations are accepted throughout the year, but the program is making an extra push for the 4th of July holiday.
Any type of cell phone is accepted and there are several local drop-off sites in mid-Missouri including:
- VA Outpatient Clinic in Jefferson City
- Truman's Bar & Grill in Columbia
- AT&T stores across the United States
The program also accepts donated cell phones via mail, and prepaid shipping labels are available online by clicking the link to the left.
