JEFFERSON CITY- First it was the redistricting, now it's the development.
Jefferson City is working on the next steps toward developing the Stoneridge Village subdivision.
The committee is looking at bringing in a Menard's home improvement store. It would join the existing Wal-Mart and future Kohl's. The proposed site is 700 feet west of Brookdale drive on McCarty.
Right now, the land is occupied by a rock quarry that has been blasting since the 1970's. However, with increased development in the area, it has become a nuisance to its neighbors, which include a Wal-Mart. The planning and zoning committee unanimously approved the user permit for Menard's, but plans for the long-term future of the quarry are still uncertain.
"The quarry operation has always been run to potentially redevelop that area. In a lot of metro areas you'll have a quarry operation and they'll just keep buying quarry forever and ever and ever and there's really no use for it in the end so it's really a redevelopment of the quarry area," said Paul Samson, Central Missouri Professional Services.
The Menard's still needs approval from the city council, which will meet on May 19. The quarry will be relocated once Menard's is built, but it will remain in operation during the entire process.
