COLUMBIA - Cell phones and Beethoven: it doesn't sound like the two should go together, but they can blend to make perfect music.
All you need is a love for music and a cell phone. Music rang from the Missouri Theatre Saturday evening, part of the "Hot Summer Nights Music Festival".
The composer's inspiration for "Concertino for Cell Phones and Orchestra" came from every day sounds.
"He was sitting in the airport one day and hearing this cacophony of cell phones going on around him and being a musical person he thought how interesting it would be to incorporate something from modern technology into the symphony orchestra," said Kanani May, Missouri Symphony Orchestra.
Everyone can use cell phones to make phone calls or take video images, but the Missouri Symphony Orchestra is focusing on the tones. A soloist uses a pre-programmed phone as his musical instrument, but music wasn't just coming from the stage. Green and red lights told audience members when to play their ring tone during the piece.
"It was fun because you were really involved in the piece," said Karen Yates, Jefferson City resident.
"The reality of cell phones, of course, is that we try to turn them off in places where we think they may disturb everybody and the composer's making the statement here 'let's not turn them off, let's not see the cell phone as an offensive weapon but as part of our everyday life,'" said Kirk Trevor, Missouri Symphony Conductor.
Just like two melodies playing together, the performance combined aspects of technology and the arts. The Cell Phones and Beethoven concert was just the start to the 2007 Summer Music Festival. It continue until July 27 when the theatre will be closed for renovations.
