COLUMBIA - The school year is officially underway as Columbia Public Schools welcomed back students for their first day. Students filled the streets of Broadway and Garth as they started a new year.

Their book of tips reminds parents to help their kids with homework after school, volunteer at their child's school, and stay involved in what they're learning. Captain Zim Schwartze with the Columbia Police Department reminds all residents that the 20 mile an hour school zone will be strictly enforced.

"The traffic unit is very much aware that school has started and they will be out in force at the various school zones at various times, kind of randomly as well as some of the beat officers," said Captain Schwartze.

Some parents said their kids seemed nervous about the first day, but once they got to school they were excited to be there. The tips for parent booklets are available at the Columbia Public Library off Broadway.
