JEFFERSON CITY - The Salvation Army Red Kettle campaign got some help from the power of the force Saturday.
A group of Star Wars enthusiasts suited up for the third year in a row to ring bells for the campaign at both Jefferson City Wal-Mart locations. They're all part of a national organization called the 501st Legion, a group whose members hand-make costumes of Star Wars characters.
Salvation Army Capt. Terry Selvage said the characters usually help boost donations.
"I've watched the kids running up to them because they're so thrilled to see the Star Wars characters," Selvage said. "It's superb, because it's a draw for the store and it's a draw for the Salvation Army."
Chris Adams, a member of the 501st Legion, donned his Darth Vader suit on Saturday. It's constructed from scratch down to the finest details, like labeling on his chest armor and a speaker in his helmet playing the infamous Vader breathing noise.
"I think people are still willing to dig down deep and donate," Adams said.
