COLUMBIA - A new survey shows small business owner consumer confidence is at it's lowest mark in more than two decades.

A survey released by the National Federation of Independent Businesses polled more than 850 small business owners in order to gauge their sentiment toward the economy. The results show their economic confidence is at it's lowest point in more than two decades.

Salon owner Debra Harris says creating and maintaining a regular customer base is essential in these hard financial times. "It's very important because they are supporting you while you support your familiy," said Harris. "They come back and show their appreciation by patronizing your business."

But because of the recession, customers frequenting Harris' salon are few and far between. She isn't alone.

"I think a lof of people are not as happy as they could be," said Don Laird, President of the Columbia Chamber of Commerce. "They know it's worse other places. But that is a small solice when you look at the whole thing."

Harris refuses to allow public opinion to dictate the way she runs her business.

"This is how I feed my family," Harris said. "Would I walk away from it? Of course not. I raised four kids on my business."

Economic pundits say small businesses are the backbone to the economy.
