JEFFERSON CITY (AP) - U.S. Education Secretary Margaret Spellings says states need to incorporate nontraditional methods to help fill teacher vacancies. She pointed to federal programs like Teach for America to recruit more college students and alternative certifications for those already working. Spellings has been traveling to several states to talk with state education boards about the No Child Left Behind law. Missouri elementary and middle school teacher requirements include grade requirements, taking certain classes and time student teaching. Lawmakers in past years have debated legislation that would also accept a different certification program, geared toward people already in the work force.
