COLUMBIA - Near the corner of Old Plank Road and Hickam Drive, a real "crab"...or a kind of crabapple, made by a Mr. Treelighter.

On a 45-year old crabapple tree, Randy Fletcher writes his signature with a cursive of cords.

"The Magic Tree does convey something that is really impossible to put into words," said Fletcher.

His ink? In many different colors of illuminating light. But it is not the light that makes the tree "magic."

"It seems to me the Magic Tree conveys something impossible to put into words," said Fletcher.

The name "Magic Tree" first came from the title of a two-year old's finger painting. The title "Mr. Treelighter" was given to Fletcher by neighbors who admired the tree.

"Whenever someone tells you that they love something you did. It's just a wonderful thing," said Fletcher.

For the last 14 years, Fletcher has scaled 28-foot ladders in the dark to wrap a magic gift.

"There's almost nothing I'd rather do than climb up in the tree," said Fletcher.

After more than 120 hours and more than 75,000 lights, Fletcher made an old crabapple disappear.

"I see beauty as a signature of love, that absolutely unconditional love," said Fletcher.
