COLUMBIA - A group of teens attacked Karen Taylor's son, Adam Taylor on June 7th, 2009.

Ever since the attack Taylor has been working to make Columbia a safer place. She wants to have security cameras installed in all parking garages and in the downtown area.

"The only thing that led to the arrest was the video camera footage because he was knocked out unconscious and could not identify who did this to him," Taylor said.

Security cameras in the parking garage led to the arrest of three Columbia teens within hours of the attack.

"We would not have been able to solve that as quick as we did if we did not have the benefit of the cameras," Captain Brad Nelson, of the Columbia Police Department, said.

Most Columbia parking garages have security cameras, but not all of them have cameras inside. Police say inside cameras are the best way to identify suspects. The City Council rejected a proposal for downtown security cameras in the Spring.

But Taylor plans to bring the proposal back in front of city council July 20th. If one member of the council changes their mind about the security cameras, the issue will be up for public comment in August.
