JEFFERSON CITY - For those who have forgotten or never learned Driver's Ed correctly in the first place, KOMU gives you a little reminder on the tricks of winter driving.

Traffic officials caution people not to drive when weather is bad, but some of us have to drive even if the weather conditions are terrible.

Most people in Missouri are not accustomed to driving on ice and snow like those from other parts of the country where snow is much more frequent. So here's a quick course that might save you from plowing into another motorist or careening off into a ditch.

The simplest of those tips:
-Do everything gradually
-Do not accelerate too quickly
-Do not turn too quickly
-Do not brake too quickly.

A simple solution to slowing down is down-shifting, much like a tractor-trailer does. To do this, don't slam on your brakes, because your wheels are just going to lock up. Rather, downshift from 4th to 3rd gear, then from 3rd to 2nd, then from 2nd to 1st. This allows your transmission to do the work for you instead of your brakes and you can downshift with an automatic transmission.

Missouri Highway Patrol echoes these tips and of course, emphasizes the need to drive with care.

"Realize it's going to be slow-going, that the roads could be slick in areas, you're gonna have to travel under the speed limit, you're gonna have to allow plenty of space between you and the car in front of you," Missouri Highway Patrol Lt. John Hotz said.

Truth be told, driving too slow can almost cause more problems than you might think. When people drive too slowly down a big hill, they don't have enough momentum to get back up the hill. Those drivers have to stop, turn around, and try it again.

So keep in mind, drive with care, drive gradually, but also be sure to maintain a reasonable speed to handle those hills.
