DEXTER - As Ike bears down on Florida and the Gulf Coast, residents are still recovering after Hurricane Gustav hit just last Monday.
Gustav tore through the Gulf Coast, hitting Louisiana just three years after Katrina hammered the state. Echoing the 2005 response, Governor Matt Blunt sent 1,300 troops from the Missouri National Guard to help with relief efforts.
Many of the same Missouri National Guard units were in Louisiana three years ago. When Hurricane Gustav hit, the men and women of the National Guard once again answered the call. In Dexter, Missouri, the 12-21st transportation company of the national guard got ready.
After a final run through, the soldiers loaded up and got ready to head out. But, this company made a stop in Little Rock, Arkansas to await it's orders for deployment to Louisiana. One company who already called down for help is the 11-40th out of Fulton.
The military police company originally received orders to travel from Minden, Louisiana, down to Lake Charles. But, once in Alexandria, those orders changed.
Now, they must travel down to New Iberia, about two hours west of New Orleans.
New Iberia is having trouble with looting and vandalism, and with only a sheriff's department for law enforcement, New Iberia needs the soldiers as soon as possible.
