JEFFERSON CITY (AP) - The Missouri Coordinating Board for Higher Education is endorsing a $51 million need-based student aid program. The proposed program would replace two similar programs that are severely under funded. The new program would benefit students who maintain a 2.5 grade point average, whose family makes less than $12 thousand and who meet the April First deadline for applying for federal financial aid. Students who qualify will receive grants ranging from a thousand dollars to $2,150 per semester for up to eight semester. Senator Charlie Shields, a St. Joseph Republican, says the proposal will likely be introduced as part of the higher education package expected to accompany the sale of a portion of the Missouri Higher Education Loan Authority.
