ELDON - Sports is not always about braun. Sometimes it is the muscle between the ears that matters the most.
By now you know the story of Eldon's Christian Cantwell. He went all the way to Beijing, China and won a silver in the Olympic shot put.
Well, Eldon is not done. The town is sending another native to China to compete for a world title.
Kim Willis is never bored with a board.
Willis played some checkers as a kid, but everything changed in the mid 1990's when she surfed into her future.
"I got online and went into this site and one night he came in and said my name is Zuki King and I am the world champion," said Willis.
Zuki tutored Willis online and ten years ago she started traveling the world playing checkers competitions and collecting hardware along the way.
"It's like a math problem. You get all these crazy angles that you get to look at," Willis stated.
Kim plays three move restricted checkers. It's a little bit different than regular checkers. They use a deck of cards to decide their first three moves.
"This is my bible. It teaches you strategy. It teaches you how to move ahead," Willis said.
She is the king. The U.S. champion and a woman's international master at three move checkers.
It qualified her to jump an ocean to get to the first ever mind sports competition in Beijing, China.
"The top woman that wins will play omangle doubis from Turkmenistan for the world title," said Willis.
Americans call it checkers. The rest of the world calls it draughts.
"I want to be the one that is holding these squares and be in control," Willis said.
Willis says the game is a battle of strength of the minds and it is caused her a few sleepless nights.
"I have to see what it is because it's driving me crazy and I want to see what it is. I get up in the middle of the night and i go in there and do it," said Willis.
Willis says she is starting a group to teach kids how to play.
Eldon organized a benefit to help her raise money for the trip to China. The games are October 3 through the 18.
