JEFFERSON CITY - A new law Gov. Jay Nixon signed Thursday organizes the incoming federal stimulus dollars.
Gov. Nixon signed the fully bipartisan bill into law Thursday. The new law is designed to track incoming money from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act allocated to the state.
Gov. Nixon said the law is important for jump-starting Missouri's economy. He said, "To bring about this positive, urgent economic growth, we must ensure that every single dollar is put to good use. We simply do not have a margin for error."
State Sen. Gary Nodler, R-Joplin, said the law helps improve accountability within government.
"It also permits us to segregate the federal funds, so that as they're used in the budget process, they clearly delineate the line from our general revenue stream," he said.
The new law gives State Treasurer Clint Zweifel control over incoming and outgoing funds.
He said he thinks the overall goal of the stimulus is what is most appealing to the extra duties.
"We can accurately track that information, and then also and most importantly we can put that money to work right away for Missourians, get Missourians back to work and help rebuild Missouri's economy," Zweifel said.
