BARNETT - Neighbors say a weekend boating and music festival brought major damage to several lake-front businesses.
Aquapalooza took place at the Lake of Ozarks Saturday. Local business owners are outraged that they've been left to pick up the pieces following the event.
It took place in Barnett, in the Gravois arm of the Lake of the Ozarks. Business owners there blame the Water Patrol and an excess of boats on the water for the damage.
Aquapalooza brought more than 1,000 vessels to the Lake of the Ozarks. Witnesses say the boats stirred up enough waves to wash ashore and damage docks and structures there. One business owner said he's worried the damage could have a major impact on his bottom line.
"It's terrible for business," store manager Lance Rutter said. "Nobody wants to park a nice boat that you spent a whole bunch of money on on a dock that look likes it going to break in a second."
Rutter said almost 75 percent of his business comes from people driving in on boats. He says more than half of his docks are destroyed and will be out of service for the rest of the summer because he can't afford to fix them. Retter says the bill could total $250,000.
The water patrol says it did everything it could to control the event, but says because the lake is public waters, officers can't restrict access.
"There are always that many boats on the Lake of the Ozarks, they just all kind of concentrated on the Gravois arm this year on this event," Water Patrol Sergeant Gerry Callahan said. "I think its just one of those things where that part of the lake isn't as used to seeing that type of traffic as other parts of the lake are."
The Water Patrol says it will review the damage and complaints from the event. The patrol will use that information to decide whether or not to grant Aquapalooza a permit in the future.
