JEFFERSON CITY - Jefferson City taxpayers may see higher rates due to a new state law. But taxpayers like Marlo Bolinger worry higher tax rates could affect her budget, especially with higher gas prices.

"If they increase tax, I will probably live in the county," Bolinger said. "It will be much cheaper eventually."

Jefferson City currently taxes the citizens eight cents lower than a new law permits. At the current rate, the owner of a $100,000 home pays $950 a year in property tax. If the rate increases, the new tax bill would be $15 more annually.

"If you raise property taxes, especially raise property tax for no reasons, then that hurts the citizen of Jefferson," City Attorney Nathan Nickolaus said. "If you don't raise the tax, the city won't be able to build their project, which also hurts the City of Jefferson."

The city will calculate pros and cons before making a final decision. The city will hold a public hearing in August and make its final decision after that.
