COLUMBIA - Nixon and company think Governor Blunt's 2005 Medicaid cuts need to be restored.

Columbia resident Max Lewis has been disabled since 1986. He gets his health care from MO Health Net, but says it's not enough.

"I have to get supplies for myself every month," Lewis said. "Leg bag, bed bag, catheter, things like that. There are just so many needs that I need that I can't necessarily afford. And I have to draw the line somewhere. So there are medical needs now that aren't getting met."

Attorney General Jay Nixon has five steps to improve health coverage. His plan includes a website comparing health prices and focuses on prevention.

"I think that the vast majority of Missourians believe that we need to restore these cuts, that we should provide a pathway so that families and individuals can get health care," Nixon said. "That we need to have transparency in the system so that more people are covered, not fewer people covered."

The number of people without health insurance in Missouri has increased from 6.2 percent of the population in 2005 to 13.3 percent in 2007. And like Lewis, others are finding it hard to make sacrifices. Fulton resident Amy Ewalt was suffering from heart arrhythmia, which causes an irregular heartbeat. Ewalt didn't think she could afford to go to the hospital, and her friends had to convince her to go.

"It saddens me to think that's how much it has to cost to go to the ER," Fulton resident Amy Ewalt said. "And that was the deciding factor whether or not I went."

The two republicans fighting to face Jay Nixon in the general election--Congressman Kenny Hulshof and Treasurer Sarah Steelman--both back Governor Blunt's Medicaid cuts. Steelman says Nixon's plan won't work without raising taxes in massive amounts.
