COLUMBIA - GetAbout Columbia seeks to make Columbia more foot and bicycle friendly through new infrastructure projects, but with $12 million to spend on $17 million worth of "priority list" projects, some will have to be eliminated.

Not everyone chooses to deal with traffic.

"Cars are a hassle, cost a lot, you always have to fix them, it seems like there's always something wrong with them," cyclist Cory McCarter said.

That's why Columbia citizens gathered earlier this evening to voice their opinions on which projects from the priority list should be constructed. The purpose of this project is to promote other forms of transportation like using a bike. Many of the citizens present were cyclists and pushed for more trails than sidewalks.

"I use it for everything," McCarter said. "I go grocery shopping. I have panniers on my bike and a rack, so I shop, go to work."

And that's what GetAbout Columbia says it was selected to promote more of.

"Columbia was one of four communities that was chosen by the federal level to create a modal shift, which means getting people out of their vehicles and into another form of transportation," GetAbout Public Information Specialist Jill Stedem said.

Cyclists like McCarter are excited.

"I look forward to seeing what the City of Columbia and GetAbout come up with," McCarter said.

The final decision is up to the city council. There are street friendly and sidewalk friendly areas for bikers and pedestrians already in place.
