COLUMBIA - The 1980's are known as the glory years for the Missouri Basketball program.
The Tigers won six Big 8 Championships and a few postseason tournament titles. Fans are still stoked about the team from 1986-87. The trendsetters are now making a comeback after 21 years.
In Norm Stewart's 32 seasons roaming the Tiger sidelines, he brought a presence few could challenge.
Missouri Basketball player Gary Leonard remembered, "You learn pretty quick in Norm Stewart's system that he is the most intense individual on the court and practices are brutal."
In the 1986-87 season, the Tigers had something special. Led by Derrick Chievous, the team had high hopes for a Big 8 Championship.
Tiger Basketball player Greg Church said, "We were on a pretty good team and projected to do well."
The success didn't just happen on the hardwood. The 1986-87 Tigers took their show off the court and into the studio.
"I knew it may take 20 years, but I knew the public would eventually appreciate this,"explained Leonard.
Church's response was a little different. "I didn't really want to do it. I was forced to do it. I was held at gun point and you can see the results."
Coach Norm Stewart stated, "We let the kids carry that program. They came up with the idea of the rap. Stop and think about it. That was a pretty damn good rap."
The song "Cats From ol' Mizzou" took control of the airwaves. It played on the radio and before Tiger games. The Tigers each got a little time if they wanted to roll a rhyme.
"If I'm going to be embarrassed I want to be embarrassed doing something. So I jumped in. I said yeah, I'll do one," explained Leonard.
Not only did the players rap, Coach Stewart also mastered the mic.
"Some of them, that's why they weren't any better players, they didn't have any rhythm. I had more rhythm than a couple of them and I can't even dance," joked Stewart.
Church remembered, "It shocked us a little bit. Unfortunately I was told that he has more rhythm than me which is scary"
Some were scary, but others were classics. Fans admired them and the ladies couldn't resist.
"The women liked the Michael Ingram one because he had kind of that Barry White," said Leonard.
But like Ingram, the rap faded away. Recently, thanks to the internet, "The Cats from 'Ol Mizzou" are back in circulation.
The music and the Tigers ended early in the NCAA tournament when Xavier upset Mizzou in the first round. This loss squashed their hopes for a national title, but put their prayers for a billboard hit on hold.
"Look how far ahead of the curve we were with rap music. We were at least ten years. We were the original rappers," said Leonard.
Derrick Chievous is author of the rap. He's the one that put the band-aid on the map and scored at an all-time meter. He still remains Mizzou's all-time scoring leader.
