COLUMBIA - "No running in the halls" is a thing of the past.
Elementary students would usually get in trouble for doing what they're doing at Blue Ridge Elementary.
For the Blue Ridge Elementary Running and Walking Club, it's mostly running in these hallways.
"We started it last year and over the course of the last year we've probably had about 30 that are regulars," Kevin Tyler, running club instructor, said. "I'm really trying to teach kids pace, but for some of the little ones it's 'run as fast as you can then walk, run as fast as you can then walk.'"
Christian Jones, a first-grader in the club, says running in the halls is "pretty amazing."
Jones and his fellow students meet before school three days a week, Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
"We run about 15 minutes everyday," Tyler said.
He says running three times a week helps get the kids on track for a healthy lifestyle.
"[We're] trying to give them the idea that being in shape is fun and it's great to be healthy," he said.
The club also helps students with outside activities.
"I have high steppers on Monday and Wednesday," Jazmene Groves, a fifth grader in the running club said. She says participation in the club has helped her out with the other sports.
"Now I'm playing basketball with a real team," Jones said.
The only time students stop is to grab a popsicle stick, but it's not time to eat, these sticks are for something else. Each stick represents a lap, eight laps equal one mile. After catching their breath it's time to add up the laps.
"Candace, how many? Eight, good job, you did a mile candace so far this year you've done 10 and a half miles," Tyler said.
But what's the best part of running club?
"Getting the sticks,"first-grader Monique Rued said.
"I like being able to go really fast," Jones said.
"That you get to run in the hallway and have fun." Groves said.
That's right, the "no running in the hallway" rule doesn't apply at Blue Ridge Elementary- at least not before the bell rings.
