COLUMBIA - If someone said your husband is "flat", you might take that as a knock against his personality, but in Amanda Stapp's case, she would agree with you.

When Stapp walks in her local ceramics shop, she brushes off more than just paint. Wherever she goes she can't shake the stares.

"Sometimes people will come over to the counter...What's she doing? And kind of whisper," explained Mudroom owner Erin Kespohl.

"The first couple times. They're like whoa. There's a guy there or they'll laugh. Because they thought he was real at first and then they realized he's not. People do double takes especially in parking lots and they see him and they're like oh there's someone sitting in the car, but then they see he's flat and they're like what is that all about?" said Amanda.

Before we tell you why this woman is carrying half a cutout of her other half, you should know Flat-Jason is a life size replica of Stapp's husband. And his social calendar is anything but flat. Mrs. Stapp takes her makeshift-Mr. to courtwarming and bowling and she says he's the perfect husband."I just like his personality, Stapp explains, "He never complained when I needed him to go to an event. He would sit in a corner and I would know where he was."

Amanda and Jason married in 2008, but a short time later, Jason deployed to Kosovo. Upon his departure, Stapp had a stroke of genius and decided to make her own picture of her husband. "I did a lot of research on how other families deal with deployment and I found a website called 'flat daddies.com.' That organization provides free enlarged portraits of the service member to the service member's family," Stapp said.

For an entire year, Stapp carried around her corrugated companion. "There are so many of those joke shows going on I think that many people thought that it was one of those. But initially it did cause people to ask questions about him and then that would give me an opportunity to talk about him," Stapp explained, "Most of them say oh, make sure you tell him thank you for his service when you talk to him next."

With his deployment, this couple never really had the chance to celebrate their marriage. So after a year, Amanda wasn't about to have her wedding reception fall flat. The live 3-D Jason came home to replace her cardboard counterpart, leaving Flat-Jason under wraps. Jason Stapp, back from Kosovo commented, "I thought it was really funny. That's what I like about Amanda and really love about her is her ability to laugh and have a good time. And I thought that's what it really was, a good coping mechanism for her. A mechanism that ended in their wedding reception with Flat-Jason a best man. Jason Stapp is a captain in the Missouri Army National Guard.
