COLUMBIA - The veterans aboard Central Missouri's second Honor Flight have a very busy day ahead of them.
35 mid-Missouri veterans and their companions rolled out of Columbia a little after three this morning, off on a day-long whirlwind tour of the nation's capital.
Once in D.C., the veterans will head to the WWII memorial. Erected just five years ago, it's a memorial many vets will never get to see. Currently, the Honor Flight Network estimates about 1000 WWII veterans die each day.
Also on schedule for the group is a visit to Arlington National Cemetary to pay tribute to those who never got the chance to see the memorial.
The veterans are due back in Columbia Tuesday night around ten to a hero's welcome.
This honor flight costs about $11,000, or $300 per veteran, all provided free of charge by honor flight donors.
Right now about 50 mid-Missouri veterans are on the waiting list for the next Honor Flight.
KOMU 8's Sarah Hill and photographer Scott Schaefer are on the flight and will bring back more this week on KOMU 8 News.
