MEXICO - There is a blood drive in Mexico the last Monday of every month.

As many as 100 people were expected on Monday. Some donors have been giving blood for years.

"My grandson who is 16 was diagnosed with Burkitt's Lymphoma last summer and has been undergoing Chemo every 21 days. It will benefit him and all of the people who need blood," said volunteer Betty Owens.

The next blood drive in Mexico will be held next month at the H&R Block building.

A popular Cholesterol-lowering drug may have also have a clot busting benefit.

A new study funded by the makers of Crestor, finds the drug can lower the risk of blood clots in the legs and lungs by 43 percent. Researchers studied more than 17,000 healthy adults.

For two years, half took Crestor, the other half took Placebos. For every 18 patients treated with the drug, one person saw prevention of a heart attack, stroke, or blood clot.

Combining several heart medications into one pill can lower the risk for heart disease and stroke nearly as well as taking all the medications separately, but without an increased risk for side effects.

Researchers in Canada and India studied more than 2,000 adults, giving them a combination of heart medications or a single medication.

They found people taking the Polypill had lower blood pressure and Cholesterol levels after 12 weeks.

Experts say another benefit is that patients are more likely to stick to their medication, the less pills they need to take.
