COLUMBIA - A technology summit at MU's journalism Centennial Celebrations highlighted a new way that the web is bringing moms together.

Gannett, a company that owns newspapers and television stations throughout the country, launched a project to create an online social network for moms.

More than 60 websites all over the country unite women through local activities and online discussions. Women are able to connect through an array of community issues, and journalists are able to create stories from their posts.

Women like Melissa Black, who has two kids and is expecting a third, finds great benefit from these websites.

"Instinctively, other moms congregate to other women to get the information they need, whether that's about the best pediatrician or best places to eat or take your kid," said Black.

All of Gannett's mom sites are currently local niches. The company plans to take the sites national in order to meet the market's needs where it does not currently own a newspaper or television station.
