KINGDOM CITY - North Callaway R-1 School District is seeking bond money to improve its facilities.

Damaged roofs, outdated plumbing, faulty drainage systems, and poor quality glass are just a few problems plaguing North Callaway schools. In order to raise money for repairs, the district proposed a $2.5 million bond to residents.

Kristi Deforest teaches math at Auxvasse Elementary and her son attends North Callaway High School. She is concerned about the safety of the students and their warmth during cold days.

"The rooms get really, really hot," Deforest said. "It'll go from one extreme, from really hot, to another extreme of really cold. On a day like today I had kids coming in with jackets on."

Only a few classrooms in each of the four schools have a furnace, and the air conditioning only cools about half of the school when it works. If North Callaway voters approve the bond, air conditioning units will be installed in every room, costing more than $1 million.

"We're optimistic," superintendent Bryan Thomsen said. "Of course, there is always the unknown on who's going to get out and vote. We are the only issue on the ballot."

North Callaway residents will vote on the bond Nov. 3. To pass, the bond needs four of seven voters, or 57.1 percent, to vote 'Yes.' Thomsen said there are no signs of opposition to the bond.

If voters approve the bond, the average taxpayer will pay an additional $5 per year for two years. Personal property and real estate taxes will be raised an average of seven cents for every $100 of assessed property.
