JEFFERSON CITY - A legislator says he hopes this law protects women from coercion.

"No doctor should ever do anything to his patient without their full and free consent," said Bob Onder, representative. "And we fear that this is not happening in the abortion industry right now."

House Bill 1831 requires physicians to fully inform pregnant women about abortion procedures, and let them see an ultrasound or hear the heartbeat of the unborn child, free of charge.

"The anti-coercion section would make sure that women are not coerced in having an abortion and that no one able to threaten their job, or threaten their scholarship, or threaten their life in order to coerce them into an abortion," said Onder.

Legislators said the bill will protect women by giving them more information about abortion. However, a pro-choice group says it increases barriers.

"There is going to be more delays for women who are seeking for abortion care, sometimes up to a week or two weeks delay, which does not stop women from accessing abortion care, but only pushes them further into pregnancy or possibly pushes them into very dangerous self-induced abortions," said Michelle Trupiano of Planned Parenthood.

Planned Parenthood said the current informed consent process and intensive counseling during the 24-hour waiting period give women enough protection.

"We much rather spend our time, energy and money, and we wish that the opponents to abortion would join us in this, in focusing on prevention and focusing on reducing unintended pregnancies through access to family planning, comprehensive sex education," said Trupiano.

The bill now awaits senate approval.

Onder hopes no one would tie-up this law in court, while planned parenthood continues lobbying against the bill.
