One bridge needs a little more help than the rest. Old and in need of repair, Glasgow Bridge is long overdue for improvements. MoDOT says the bridge hasn't been upgraded in more than two decades, but finding the right contractor to make repairs in less than a year is giving MoDOT a headache.

"We've contacted some of the major contractors that pulled the plans on the project and they've told us that our time frame was too aggresive. That was one of the major concerns that they had when they were looking at the project," said MoDOT District Engineer Dan Niec. 

MoDOT says improvements would remove steel beams that span the bridge, widen the road by four feet and add concrete guards along the bridge for safety. They also estimate bridge repairs could take up to a year to complete, and closing the bridge would force commuters to travel 60 miles out of their way.

"Costs'll be terrible, 'cause you just don't like paying that much for gas or anything else. They never give us another option. I don't want to drive that far," said Glasgow resident Linda Garvin.

"I feel sorry for them. 'Cause I put my own self in their place. What if I was working in Marshall and I had to drive all the way through Boonville or Miami and go to work everyday at three dollars a gallon?" wondered Fayette resident Frog Boss.

Regardless of drivers' concerns, MoDOT will re-evaluate bridge plans and what contractors are calling an aggressive deadline. State and federal funds will cover costs of the bridge repairs, which MoDOT says could cost up to $15 million.
