FULTON - Do not ever let anyone tell you that you cannot do something. A Westminster College football player shows us how you are never too old to achieve a dream.

Westminster College in Fulton plays division three football. They also have one of the most impressive storylines in all of college athletics.

The 2008 Westminster football team only has 3 wins this year, but its still a dream season.

"Bob's our biggest inspiration on the team. Going through two-a-days, going through everything we've gone through. By god if Bob can do it, we're going to be out there," said Westminster senior linebacker Neil McCutcheon.

Bob Schembre is not the star player, in fact, he spends most of the game on the bench.

But the 51 on his jersey is not just his number, its his age.

"We have a 51 year old that's going to play with us and I chuckled and said, 'what?' I just couldn't believe it," said Broc Silvers, Westminster senior linebacker.

"He said how is your geriatric medicine skills whenever he came in. So I knew it was going to be some fun stuff," said Westminster Athletic Trainer Josh Thompson.

Some fun stuff for Schembre included sweating through two-a-day practices. Something he has wanted to do since he was 17, but instead Schembre joined the military and served for 6 years. He started a family. Schembre has four kids and owns his own business.

"[My] basic dream was if I could make it through two-a-days I would quit and just go to school," said Schembre.

"It was a dream that he had for his whole life and I said let's go for it. Let's see what happens," said Westminster football coach John Welty.

What happened is something amazing to fans, a lesson to teammates, and a fairy tale to Schembre.

He made the team.

"They gave me the uniform and I just put it on and I sat there and looked at myself and I'm playing college football. I couldn't believe it," Schembre said.

"I look at our guys and I say 'how are you sitting out when this 51 year old man is running around completing every rep and completing every drill and you're sitting out," said Silver.

He competes with pains. Schembre suffers from Achilles tendonitis and a degenerative disc in his back.

"To me as a 53 year old, Could I do that? No way. I would be in intensive care right now if I went through one practice," Welty said.

But it is not just about practice. Schembre's dream involved getting into a game.

"We're all chanting 'Bob, Bob, Bob,' said Silvers.

"When he came in it was something special. It was something I don't think anybody on this team will ever forget," McCutcheon said.

On September 6 with the game decided and only seconds on the clock, it happened.

Coach called on 51 and put him in.

On the first play he is in, Schembre made the tackle.

"I was laying on the guy and he was cussing at me telling me to get off. I'm just enjoying every moment of it. All the guys laying on me getting off. I said I just made the tackle," said Schembre.

"If our team had the heart that Bob had, we'd be unstoppable. Any team would. I don't care if you had 11 guys, if you had Bob's heart you'd win every game," said Silvers.

A game measured by numbers, Westminster will always remember this season by the number 51.

"I didn't realize that doing my best and trying my hardest and coming in hurt and giving a full effort would be a lesson not only on the field for these guys, but a lesson in life," said Schembre.

"You watched a man live a dream. It was awesome," said Welty.

Bob turned 52 during the season, but he is not the oldest NCAA football player in history.

Last year a 59 year old set the record by playing for another division three school.

On the season Bob is credited with four tackles.
