FULTON - Several Mid-Missouri police departments are using non-lethal ways to stop crimnals in their tracks, and Fulton is joining that group.
Besides the usual pistols, lights and pepper spray, the Fulton police force is adding a $12,000 gun that doesn't fire to its arsenal. Starting Monday, Fulton criminals just might get stung with one of the eight taser guns that will be available.
"It affects the nervous system of the individual, where they can't be combative," said Fulton Police Chief Steve Myers.
Small cameras are mounted on the gun to ensure the officer is using it at the proper time. When the gun is turned on, the camera starts recording immediately.
"I think if it's a deterrent to crime, I'm all for it. It's a lot better than shooting a man with bullets," said Fulton resident, Isham Holland.
Some Fulton residents think the stun guns will help lower criminal activity. Police agree. Currently, one-third of the Fulton police force is trained to operate and use tasers.
