COLUMBIA - The Statewide Transportation Improvement Program will include more than 600 new road and highway projects. These will start next year and continue through 2014.
MoDOT estimates the total cost to be 6.5 billion dollars. For the first two years the money comes from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act and the Safe & Sound bridge Improvement program. Because of this money large projects will take place during 2009 to 2010.
There are some concerns that the projects won't be finished after this money runs out. By 2011 the amount of funding drops from 1.2 billion to 450 million. The money for the rest of the projects will come from gas tax, vehicle sales tax, and federal funding. Maintenance projects will more common during this time than building and expansion.
MoDOT executive engineer Roger Swartze said he is confident all the projects will be completed. "The projects that we are committed to in our five year right away construction program are all projects that we know we can fund with existing revenue that's coming to MoDOT. We're just not able to add new projects in those years."
