BOONVILLE - Two bars in Boonville recently went smoke-free voluntarily.
That closely coincides with Columbia's smoking ban ordinance which went into effect a year ago. William Simmons is a smoker, but you won't see him light up his cigarette in Maggie's Bar & Grill
"I don't mind the non-smoking it doesn't smell like an ash tray in here and I like that," said Simmons.
Maggie's Bar & Grill is voluntarily smoke free and has been since it opened a couple of months ago.
"There is enough people that appreciate the non-smoking atmosphere that it hasn't effected me at all. It's been positive," said owner Ilene Vanabbema.
However, just a block away at main street pub, ash trays are on the tables.
"It does not bother anybody. If you scan the bar now there's a lot of non-smokers in here," said owner Kyle Bishop. "They play shuffleboard; they play cards and everything. If they didn't want to come in they would go down where there is non smoking; where they have the right to go."
Boonville does not have a smoking ordinance and there are no efforts to make that happen.
"It's a choice, not the will of a government saying you have to have an ordinance prohibiting smoking or an ordinance saying that everything's going to be smoking," said Jim Painter of the Boonville City Council. "That to me is ridiculous."
Ridiculous to some, but vital to others. If the city of Boonville passes a smoking ban like Columbia's, the Isle of Capri Casino would have to follow the rules too.
