COLUMBIA - The Columbia Board of Education looked at a budget prediction for the next four years Monday night. But, the figures are coming up short, so board members are crunching numbers.
"We are not generating the revenue that we need in order to maintain teacher salaries in our current level of programming," said Superintendent Phyllis Chase
The school district is already dipping into reserve funds which the board expects to be virtually gone in 4 years.
Critics point out the board raised Chase's salary by 12% this year.
"One of the things that would be in our salary proposal will be that administrators' salaries will be raised proportionately to increases in teachers' salaries," said Ed Hanson, president of the Columbia Community Teachers Association.
But, before the school board can worry about salary increases, it must decide how to fix the district budget.
"Either we'll have to look at increasing the levy which has tax implications, or we'll have to look at reducing the current level of programming or increasing class size," said Chase.
