JEFFERSON CITY - The Missouri National Guard has been fighting flood water, fires and helping with hurricane relief.

Members of the guard get paid through state payroll once activated for disaster help. Guard officials said that causes a delay in pay.

The governor activates guard members in times of need, such as state and national emergencies. Once activated for state emergencies, guard members must join the state payroll system. This system delays the first paycheck for about a month. But National Guard officials said this isn't a new issue.

"The Missouri National Guard Members, when they are called to state emergency duty go into a pay system that was actually established in the year 2000, so it wasn't established even in this current administration," said Capt. Tamara Spicer of the Mo. National Guard.

Even though this delay isn't new, some state officials said they are hoping to eliminate it. However, the National Guard and state payroll system are not currently making any adjustments.
