ST. LOUIS - Democrat Jay Nixon has won the gubernatorial race for Missouri.
The Associated Press announced the projection shortly after 7 p.m. CST, but Nixon did not speak on his win until about 10:05 p.m. He entered a scene of screaming supporters, and he made a quick promise.
"Missourians voted for change and with me as governor change is what they'll get," Nixon said in his acceptance speech.
Republican gubernatorial candidate Kenny Hulshof announced his concession at 9:38 p.m CST. Hulshof made the announcement at the Holiday Inn Executive Center in Columbia. Hulshof called Nixon to congratulate him on his victory. Hulshof said he will be a supporter of the governor as a private citizen.
"We should focus on what is good with our state, and how we must move forward," Hulshof said during his concession.
He thanked all those who came to the party and also those who supported him throughout the campaign.
