COLUMBIA - A small group of doctors and nurses departed for Haiti today.

A small group of University Hospital doctors and nurses gave up their own money and vacation time to help people in Haiti.

Ear nose and throat doctor Matthew Page said he felt compelled to get a team together the second he saw Haiti on the news.

"There are people that I know on the ground who need my help, and the help of the people on our team that we can provide. And we can't wait anymore," said Page.

The group packed eight large suitcases full of supplies including sutures, bandages, and several types of medicine. They barely had any room to bring their own belongings so each brought a small carry on with scrubs and dry food.

Along with Dr. Page the team includes: Dr. Kevin Lollar, and registered nurses Katy Bundy, Gayla Lewellen, and Jessica Teschner.

They plan to help adults and children with soft tissue face and neck injures, but are willing to help anyone.

"Pretty much anyone who comes in the door who has a need, and we are capable of treating it, then we are going to attempt to treat it," said Dr. Lollar.

Tuesday they fly from St. Louis to Orlando to meet up with Dr. Jacque Lebeau -- another facial plastics reconstruction doctor. From Orlando they will travel by bus to Ft. Pierce before taking off for Haiti. They plan to return February 4.

Dr. Page said each member paid around $2,500 out of their own pocket to make the trip -- the plane tickets were $800.

People looking to contribute to the group and its cause can send checks made out to "Haiti Medical" to the Crossing Church.
