BOONE COUNTY - Gov. Blunt said he wants up to $600 million to improve Missouri bridges.

Thousands of people drive on Missouri bridges daily and the bridges are starting to show the effects.

In a letter sent to the Missouri State Highway and Transportation Commission, Blunt said "The deteriorating condition of our nation's bridges is a very real problem that must be addressed. As time passes, the list of bad bridges on our national highway system grows."

Blunt said he wants the commission to speed up the funding for his Safe and Sound Bridges program. The program is supposed to replace or repair hundreds of Missouri bridges.

The bridge located over Little Cedar Creek, right off of I-70, is one of 802 bridges that could be repaired. Experts say repairs are needed because of the rusted steel and the crumbling concrete.

"A very innovative way of looking at our state's bridges and making an approach to repair at least one bridge in every single county in our state," said Governor Blunt's press secretary Jessica Robinson.

"We appreciate Governor Blunt's support in improving our system of bridges. I believe he is interested like we are," said MoDOT Director of System Management Don Hillis.

The Missouri Highway and Transportation Commission hosts an open meeting Thursday where some decisions are expected to be made.
