HERMANN - Gasconade County voters decided to keep the county seat right where it is Tuesday night.
56 percent of voters said no to moving the courthouse from Hermann to Owensville at a cost of $6 million.
The courthouse has been in Hermann for more than 100 years, and needs either renovations or rebuilding. The ballot proposal to move the courthouse was the cheapest option.
Even after the vote, this issue still divides Gasconade County residents.
"As far as I'm concerned, I want a new building," said Gasconade County Commissioner Ron Jost. "I don't want to remodel this one, and I'll stand on that."
"It wasn't one person, it wasn't two, it was 4,300 voters that came out and told Commissioner Larimore, 'no, we're not moving our county seat,'" said Gasconade County resident Sharon Meyer.
Other options that did not appear on the ballot were renovating the courthouse for $14 million, and building a new courthouse next-door to the current one for $10 million. The commissioners meet Thursday evening at 8:30 p.m. in Owensville to discuss where they will go from here.
