BOONVILLE - Businesses are in high gear this weekend with more than 500 cyclists in town.

One summer kickoff is bringing together music-lovers and cycling fans from all across Missouri, including the Pratt family.

The Pratts call Kansas City home, but they also feel right at home along the Katy Trail.

"I thought, 'if we can do 15 miles around our lake, we can do this,' so we practiced a little bit," cyclist Tracy Pratt said. "I got up to about 20 miles with the kids, and I said, 'let's do this,' and the kids said, 'we're on board,' so we did it and had fun."

The first ever Pedaler's Jamboree is a two-day festival filled with camping, cycling and music.

The turn-out was better than expected.

"I was hoping for 200-300," Jamboree director Mike Denehy said. "I thought 300 would be great, and I haven't done the final tally from this morning, but it's in the range from 500-600 riders."

This event takes a lot to pull off. Denehy got a $3,000 grant from the Boonville Tourism Commission to help pay for the bands.

As far as tourism goes, the Pedaler's Jamboree is successfully bringing cyclists into Boonville businesses.

"All day long we've been having a great time with them," Carrie Lyn's Ice Cream Parlor Co-Owner Ret Thomas said. "They've ridden all the way from Columbia, in most cases, and they come in hot, tired, hungry."

The boost in business ensures the economic wheel keeps turning.

The ride started in Columbia and continued along the Katy Trail to Boonville.

Musical groups played at stops along the way and will do the same Sunday as cyclists head back to Columbia.
