KANSAS CITY (AP) - Residents and volunteers are sandbagging in soggy western Missouri to guard against flooding that led to hundreds more evacuationsWednesday. In Levasy 35 miles east of Kansas City, 300 to 400 residents evacuated this morning after the Missouri River began encroaching the town. Authorities say at least a dozen homes were partially under water. Many residents evacuated the center of Agency, a small town east of St. Joseph that is surrounded on three sides by the Platte River. At least 20 levees have been overtopped as flood waters make their way down Missouri streams and rivers. About 40 Missouri National Guard members worked overnight to protect a water plant in Craig, north of Big Lake. 60 others are gathering in Lexington and Richmond to help with the flooding. ----- Numerous highways were closed, including U.S. 65 south of Chillicothe, all but one lane of U.S. 36 west of Chillicothe, Missouri 10 between Carrollton and Norborne, and some state routes in Ray County. National Weather Service meteorologist Suzanne Fortin said the current Missouri River flooding will rank in the top three since forecasters have been keeping track.
