14 years ago we interviewed them to see how they dealt with the problems associated with being in the flood of 1993.

Now many of those people are preparing for it all over again.

"As the water came up, you had machinery sitting here, there and yonder," claimed Orvel Lenger, a former American Legion worker, who was interviewed on KOMU News during his employment in 1993.

"You open up everything, you turn fans on...and usually after a flood, Mother Nature kind of takes pity on you." Orvel continued. He later stated that the Legion Hall in Hartsburg (now "volunteer central") was drowning in seven to eight feet of water during the flood of '93.

"I could step right off of my boat on to that roof and go in the window up there. I had it where I could slide it up and down, and I climbed in through the window," said Rich Smallwood, another local resident. "You know it comes with the territory or you wouldn't be here."

"In this kind of environment, you expect it," Orvel agreed. "And when it's predicted, you sit back and make as many preparations as you can. But it's frustrating when you get to the point when can't do no more."

But the people in Hartsburg know that they can rely on each other during these strenuous situations.

"It brings the community together, it really does. They all pitch in and help each other. It's marvelous how they're doing," said Smallwood.

"They know they survived the last one, and things got back to normal in a fairly reasonable time." Orvel claimed optimistically.

And now working hard with each other, the people of Hartsburg are positive that they will be able to get their daily lives up and running again in no time.
